Brief Biodata of M.A.Pai
Dr. M. A. Pai is Professor Emeritus, in the Dept. of Electrical
and Computer Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to
joining UIUC in 1981, he was on the faculty of Indian Institute of Technology,
Kanpur from 1963-1981 and Dean of Research & Development from 1976-1978.He
joined University of Illinois as Professor in 1981 and was involved with
development of electric Power program. He retired in 2004. A recipient of the
Bhatnagar award in 1974, Prof. Pai is a fellow of IEEE in the US, and in India a
Fellow of INSA, IAS & INAE.
He got his B.E. degree from Univ. of Madras in 1953, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from
U.C., Berkeley in 1958 and 1961 respectively. He worked in Bombay Electric
Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking from 1953-57. He taught at U.C.,
Berkeley and UCLA in 1961-62 and 1962-63 respectively before returning to India
in 1963 to join IIT Kanpur where he was a Faculty member till 1981. Besides
being involved with Research and Teaching in Electrical Engineering, he led
efforts in the area of computer applications for system studies and control of
Electric Power Networks. He is the author of seven books both in India and in
the US as well as several technical papers. He has been a consultant to the U.P
State Electricity Board and the UNDP for work at Central Power Research
Institute in the 70's and 80's respectively.
In addition to his current research in Power System Stability and
Renewable Energy, he is a series editor in Power Electronics and Power System
series for Springer. He keeps a keen interest in the S and T
developments in India and tracks it through his web site www.indusscitech.net.
He is a BOG member of Ambani Institute of Information and Communication
Technologies as well as Canara Engineering College, Mangalore.
